It has been awhile since I last posted...I have been chilling out since they announced the movie, but two questions in particular have been playing tug-of-war with the rest of my brain to try and figure out A) What production company does this Mark Gordon guy run (or work for) and B) Why on earth do they have this hip-hop guy Pharrell Williams doing the soundtrack?! I fear IMDB won't stay up to date enough to satisfy me (although they probably won't cast anybody until early next year), and I am not going to give money to the Hollywood Reporter just to get Voltron news. If I'm lucky, the names will be big enough that they might jump out at me. Realistically, there might be a no-name or two among the main protaginists and antagonists. I don't want to be the last to know about these things. Yeah, I got all six Star Wars DVDs (D...V...D......Does anybody other than the webmaster at WEP see these posts?), but I didn't log on to the site daily, camp out at a theatre for a midnight premeire, or dress up with a mask and lightsaber. Sorry this is so long, but I needed to blow off some steam, and I'm hoping one of you might have an answer or two...

While I'm here, I'll give a partial dream cast list:
Keith: ?
Lance: ?
Hunk: (fat guy from Dawson's Creek)
Pidge: (this would have to be a no-name)
Allura: (a few years ago, I'd have said Natalie Portman, but now: ?)
Sven: Keanu Reeves (not sure why, but it might work)
Nanny: Alex Kingston (done on ER, but still has a nanny-like accent)
Coran: ?
Amalgamus: voice of Anthony Daniels (3PO had had it with R2)
King Alfour: Patrick Stewart (after Data died, Picard left Starfleet...)
Zarkon: Michael Dorn (trade the Klingon forehead for Spock's ears...)
Lotor: Hugo Weaving (why was Mr. Smith always wearing sunglasses?)
Haggar: voice of ? (all we'd need to see are her glowing, digital eyes)
Merla: Jeri Ryan (won't need Borg makeup for this one)

Thanks for letting me waste your time...maybe next time I'll do a poll...

I don't think Mark Gordon runs any particular production company. He has worked for several companies though.

As for Pharrell phucking Williams, no idea. Having this guy on board to do the music will not do the film any favours. I don't want to hear any friggin' hip-hop in Voltron.

I agree for the soundtrack. Voltron had a rock type sound to it originally. Why mess with it?

Same here, personally I would rather see the TV show bought back first before a live action movie was started, because it needs to be known if Voltron can fight for viewers amoung kids and fight off Power Rangers and all their rubbish looking Megazords and silly timelines!

If this movie is even going to happen, which I unfortunately have started to doubt (sad habit, but we all know who's to blame and we will NOT start a discussion about it, Black Lion or anyone else!!) I actually think that if we're not going to get one of the bigwigs who compose classical scores for films, then Pharrell is a good pick-- particularly if he works with Chad, and I would be shocked off my ass if he doesn't. Both of them have gotten award upon award and have been touted as being our generation's closest thing to Quincy Jones when it comes to hip-hop/r&b, but they both are [i:3e535eaae6]also[/i:3e535eaae6] trained in other styles of music and have proven themselves time and again to be abundantly talented in those genres as well. Case in point-- Pharrell's performance at the 2004 Grammy's, covering the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" on drums with Sting, Dave Matthews and Vince Gill. He and Chad both know how to play several different instruments-- not just the usual guitar, piano, and drums, and they don't just know how to mess around with a computer and sound studio. Knowing how to actually play instruments, sing, and read and write music (which they can *also* do) in this computer-bloated age is a major, major talent, imho. So, combine genuine musical aptitude with expansive range in terms of genre along with such a long list of artists that he's worked with, and you've got one hell of a CV for Pharrell Williams.

Oh, and whether people like it or not, a LOT of hip-hop fans are big fans of anime, and there are also a lot of hip-hop fans out there. Don't believe me? Turn on MTV and you'll see how much airtime is given to hip-hop. Like it or not (and I wholeheartedly and unapologetically do), hip-hop is here to stay and is only getting bigger and earning more respect. And I know we've already discussed ad nauseum here how so many different rappers have made references to Voltron in their songs... Nelly and LL Cool J come to mind immediately. So, even if you hate hip-hop, which of course you can wholeheartedly and unapologetically do as well  , ya gotta admit, it makes good business sense to have Pharrell do the music for this movie (assuming it happens after all), looking at it from that angle. He's a talented dude, so I don't think it'll suck. If it were Master P, I'd admittedly be praying to the porcelain god right now. *Not* a Master P fan. For all we know, Pharrell may not even do an entirely hip-hop soundtrack. But considering how much of an anime and sci-fi/fantasy fan that he is, and, again, his true musical ability, having Pharrell on board may turn out way better than you guys might think, business wise if nothing else. (And good business might be a big win for the franchise right now, who knows... Even though WEP doesn't have anything to do with the movie if I remember correctly...)

Actually eventhough Pharrell produces a lot of hip hop, he also produces a lot of rock, and if you have listened to any of the N.E.R.D. cd's you would see that there is a lot of rock influence in his music.

Influence doesn't mean that it sounds rock. If it still has the hip hop "sound" or "feel" it's still counted as hip hop...whether or not it has a few guitar riffs or not.

It doesn't just have guitar riffs. Pharrell and co. have done lots of songs that are straight-up, flat-out rock, without a lick of any hip-hop sound to them.

The sound that he's been hired for, though, apparently, is not either of those two, though. What they want him for, and what he can produce (and you can hear it on virtually *everything* he does) is a very retro 80's sound. I'm guessing they're hoping he can come up with something that sounds a little like the original soundtrack that WEP came up with for the show back in the day, but make it more listener-friendly, for lack of better wording, for today's audience. What *I'm* curious about is who he'll tap to sing on the soundtrack... He's worked with so many different people. Unfortunately, I can think of several who I myself would really, really not like to see picked... some of them are just flat out *tired*... some I think just would take attention away from the movie itself, if you know what I mean. I'd rather see people say that their contribution to the soundtrack contributed to the film's overall success, not the other way around, if that makes any sense...

Why don't we leave the music up to the peaple making the movie to deside what sort of type music is needed, it could be a mix of some old 80s style with upto date style but I say put in the credits at the end the theme tune of Voltron not V3D!

Well, we don't have much of a choice but to let them decide what music to use. Unfortunately, Hollywood no longer cares about making an excellent movie or respecting the original work. Most of what is involved in movies is using what is "in" or "hip".
