I always wondered why there are 2 different versions of the Lotor/Lance fight sequence for the episode from Season 2 where the two have a contest against each other.

In the episode itself (Gladiators), Lance and Lotor have their sword duel, which ends with Lance whacking Lotor's robot hand and saying, "What was that?" when the ground shakes.

In the clip show episode (Biography, the Voltron Force), Lance and Lotor have their sword duel, which ends with Lance chopping Lotor's robot hand off and saying, "What the hell is that?" when the ground shakes.

Does anyone know why both of these scenes are different from each other?

I noticed that, too, but my brain has blocked 95% of my V3D memories to preserve what tiny shred is left of my sanity...

From what I can recall, though, the clip show was broadcast before the Gladiator one. I guess the censors missed it the first time around, but thought an amputation was too much the second time???


Did he really say "What the hell is that?" I remember doing a double-take on that myself. Can anybody definitely confirm this?

My copy of the episode, which was taped off Aussie TV, doesn't have the chopping of Lotor's hand in it either.

I thought it was just the network getting all scissor-happy with V3D again (they had cut out several scenes from other eps as well), but now I'm starting to wonder if WEP sent edited versions of episodes to some TV networks.

It is the same way on my VCDs though that I got from Malaysia (I think that is where they were from).

Do the VCDs have any other missing footage that you're aware of?


Some footage that got cut from the Aussie airing of the series includes:

-- Lance's ejecting from the damaged ship in "Escape From Bastille-12"

-- the first shots of the Galaxy Garrison meeting in "Escape From Bastille-12" ... the network just cut to Keith entering the room

-- the scene of Amalgamus "conferring" with the galactic leaders was cut from "The Troika Moons"

-- the scene where Lance angrily bangs the table in "The Troika Moons"

Er, I think you misinterpreted my post. I meant my VCDs are the same way they aired on TV.

EDIT: Now I'm confused. The two battle scenes remain different, but I always remember seeing the scenes you mentioned above.

The scenes I mentioned were cut from the Aussie airing of the series on commercial television.

The scenes were on the VHS releases though.

Ah, okay, then that is what you are talking about. Yes, those are on both the VCDs and the version that aired on TV.

I remember seeing most of the scenes that SGB mentioned, but I don't recall ever seeing the chopped hand scene though.

As I recall of that ep, a few things of Lance's get 'the chop'.

When Hunk and Pidge are holding him back...he starts to say, "You lousy...(audio fade out) ...I'm gonna kick your a...(audio fade out)..."

My hubby said it sounds like they left out the word, "SOB and A-$$" appeared to have been deliberately edited out. Probably because it was 'okay' to record, but WEP maybe felt it wasn't appropriate for TV?

I think that if they had left that kind of dialogue in the show it would have made the show better.

I'm gonna have to watch that ep tonight and see if Lance actually starts to say those words!

Lance swearing would have been the highlight of V3D. :P

Actually, I always felt the swearing was lower on purpose. I do not know why, but I think it just sounds cooler that way.

I would like to have seen Lance and Keith cuss each other in the one fight scene that they had together.

Hi I'm new but I have thought about this as well
to be honest I never noticed the difference between the 2 fights, my big question is why in the clip show was the fight included when it wouldn't occur until some episodes later?
however I will watch the full episode again, but I remember Lance getting verbally cut off before saying "ass" in 'Gladiators' but I don't ever remeber him saying "What the hell was that?" then again maybe it was just my TV station that edited it. I don't have any sort of official recordings of these episodes I rely on my incomplete set that I recored direct from TV
