While I was posting to this one thread back on Planet Arus, which is the Lion thread, a question had come to mind.
I wonder if anybody who's watched Voltron ever thought about naming their kids after Voltron characters. I sometimes think about naming them after some characters, because names like Romelle, Merla, & Allura are truly unique & original. It's a surprise that people of the Voltron generation didn't name kids after the chracters, unless they were boys. Names like Keith & maybe Lance are pretty much regular names. Keith especially since it's more common. |

I personally would not, for a couple of reasons, actually.
However "unique" and "original" a name might be to you, it's important to keep in mind that it is something that your child will be saddled with for the rest of their lives, unless they get their name legally changed, which I sure as heck would do if my name were Romelle. It could affect their self-esteem and how seriously people will take them as they grow older. It also may affect other aspects of their life such as future job prospects. But that is in a worst case scenario. Another thing is that whereas I love my Voltron, not everyone will know about it. Not everyone might grasp the significance of the name you chose for your child. I would also be a little personally embarrased to explain to my kid if they asked why they were named Allura. "Oh, I named you after my fave cartoon character from a show that I liked as a kid." I am more of a fan for traditional names or names that at least have a strong significance to you rather than basing them off of some flash-in-the-pan (mind you, I am not saying that Voltron is a flash-in-the-pan phenomena ... if there is still a thriving internet community interested in it even after almost 25 years, then that has to say something about its staying power) interest you have at the moment, or some name that you think just sounds cool. I mean, Apple or Heaven? Come on. With names like those, the first image that gets conjured up in my mind are a couple of floozies swinging around a pole in some strip joint. But that's just my 2 cents. |

Lionesse and I have discussed naming our first son (if we end up having a son) Keith Lowell Beazley.
Even though Keith is the VFs leader, it's still a pretty common name. Lowell is my middle and Beazley is obviously my last name. Ironically, even though my first name (Joshua) is pretty common and even shows up in the bible, my parents got the idea for the name from a character on a soap opera. ~KBL~ I prefer the weapon that you only need to fire once. It's pretty common for parents to get the inspiration for names from various media sources. Keith and Lance are common enough to not be 'questioned' by anyone. Pidge, Hunk, Bandor, Lotor, Zarkon, Haggar, Coran, and Merla? It should be a crime to name your kid that! Allura and Romelle? Not bad...but people would ask. The bottom line is, your kid will have to live with their name the rest of their lives. So many parents want to name their kids something 'unique and different' so they'll 'stand out'. I don't know about your guys' early life experiences, but I found it was often a BAD thing to stand out! hehe Also, how many US Presidents have 'unique' names? Millard Fillmore, I suppose. How many CEOs? Also, think about this: Do you want your kid to have to spell their name every time they give it to someone? When you choose a weird spelling, you're dooming your kid to having to correct everyone for the rest of their life. ("It's Ellyn....e-l-l-Y...-n.") I'm actually going through this right now, with another child on the way. Names are hard! |

Oh, my mom is a substitute teacher and she called one girl's name out one day as Brittany. The girl corrected her and said it's Brit-tony. But it was spelled Brittany.
Parents forget that kids are mean and cruel and they seem to forget that teachers have to pronounce the name. One girl in my elementary school had the name Rachel Ann Tuttle. Everyone called her RAT. Now, a self-aware parent would have realized what their daughter's initials would have spelled and should have reconsidered the name. ~KBL~ I prefer the weapon that you only need to fire once. My name 'Adele Marie' was given to me for a few reasons.
'Adele' was a relative's name on my mom's side - a beloved aunt. My middle name, 'Marie' is a derivative from the name 'Mary', which is my grandmother's name (my Mom's mom). Her name in Sicilian was 'Mari-Grazie' (Mary Grace in English) which means 'blessed thankfulness' (one of the meanings anyway) Rich and I still plan on adopting children and are in the process of going through some grant programs for monies out there to adopt a child from overseas. If that goes through, we'd like a girl and a boy. We always said that we'd name our daughter, "Laura Marie Previte" (Laura, in honor of my Mom's first name, 'Loretta', Marie - same as above plus it is now my middle name and it is my mother-in-law's name as well) and of course, 'Previte' our last name. Our son would be 'Richard Carmen Previte', named after his father, my husband, and the middle name is Rich's Dad's name. I've named animals after Voltron characters. My guinea pig was named, 'Allura' (she passed away this spring) and one of my two cats is named, 'Princess'. But that's about all I'll ever do in naming a child after a Voltron character, although I would consider naming a second son 'Keith Michael', after the name I gave 'Keith' in my stories, because I have always liked that name combination. And Rich is actually okay with that because they are popular names. So, ideally our children would be: Richard Carmen Previte Laura Marie Previte Keith Michael Previte ~AlluraP ~The Official Board Princess~ http://alluraandkeith.homestead.com/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Legend_of_Voltron/ |

I'd never name any kids I have after the Voltron characters. Too cheesy and it would haunt them down the road.
If I were to have a son, I'd probably name him Chris. No prizes for guessing who he'd be named after. If I were to have a daughter, I'd probably name her Emma or Helen. No prizes either for guessing where the name Helen comes from. |

Well, I guess it's better to name them after actors rather than the roles they play.

I really haven't, as I have always planned to either name my daughter Satyrn, or my son Lucifer. However, Lotor would sound just as cool.
The only reason MGS4 would appear on the X-Box 360 is if Kojima wanted to paint the sky red. |

your childs nomen is a sacred task and even though the names of cartoon characters are cool and all think about this the old addage that kids are the cruelest of the speices.on a different note my parents were hippys and named me after the creater god of east africa and the creater god of egypt to my dismay(lisa re)(lisa the creater god of east africa)(re the creater god of egypt)they told me that they wanted to have fun with my name.a childs naming process is not a game like my parents said think clearly before naming your kid.

If anyone here ever names their daughter "Voltricia", I will personally hunt you down and beat the crap out of you.
One of the things I've found really cool about Judaism is that a lot of folks name their kids after deceased relatives, as long as they didn't die young in some tragic way or because they were sick with something really horrible. (However, I'm sure there are plenty who named their kids after relatives who died in the concentration camps...) It's also a common thing to do when picking a Hebrew name for one's self when converting, like I am. I considered "Penina" (a Hebrew variation on my great-grandmother's name, Margaret), but then I remembered that she died very young from a heart attack in my grandmother's arms. Have had a hard time thinking of other deceased relatives I could honor when choosing my Hebrew name, but so many of them died in horrible ways, at a young age... or frankly were people who I had trouble getting along with (like my grandmother, not the one who I just mentioned -- she was very abusive toward my mom and never liked me much either). So... I've just done a ton of research on Hebrew names and their meanings, and now I'm hoping my rabbi will like Gavriela (which means "G-d is my strength"). A lot of people at my synagogue have two names, i.e. a first and middle... If I decide to join the trend, maybe I'll go for the second one being "Tikvah" (which means "hope"). But we'll see. But yeah. No "Voltricia" or "Haggar". sageblessing.livejournal.com ~~~ cowgirled.stumbleupon.com Female Robeast: "Is that a Blazing Sword in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" -- SGB |

My mother wanted to name me Tanya maria but stories I have been told is that "Tanya" was a stripper and porn star in my mother's day and age, so I was blessed with the name Marianne Kathryn Michaelsen (Sanderson is my married name)
My given name Marianne is german and pronounced Mar Ri An Na. Every first born daughter on the Von harten and Michaelsen side were named Marianne. It is my paternal grandmother's name. My Middle name of Kathryn was my maternal great grandmother's name (who passed away June 11, 1971 and I was born June 11, 1972) She was Polish. My mother was Katherine, but it was pronounced Katharina by her family, or Kasha for short. Ergo, why I just go by Mari or Madish to friends |
