I picked up my copy today at my local Best Buy. I definitely like Voltron's music better, however I love the relation of the characters to each other in Golion. I like the nicknames too (Chief, Shorty, Moody, Hothead, Quiet). Even with a translation, that describes the Voltron Force to a T as well as the Golion fighters. Raible irritates me however, and i've only watched Eps 1-5 so far. I was suprised to see some of the sounds from Golion made it into Voltron, like the laser fire and the Dynotherms connecting Infracells Up sounds. King Raimon sounded weird, I like King Alfor's voice better. There's more, but ultimately i'm just glad to finally be able to see the original.

I received my Voltron.com-ordered copy of the DVD today. No disc issues with that set either.

I just finished watching Eps 13-16. Great to finally learn the Golion names of guest and semi-regular characters.

I got a huge laugh when Seidou (Hunk) called Hys (Nanny) and old bag in Ep 16. lol

Got through two episodes before I fell asleep. No, not like that. I just realized I couldn't stay up for it anymore.

Like what I see so far. The show seems to have more scope to it; feels more like a fictional world rather than a cartoon.

Music is about what I expected, and I'm not impressed. Even First Gundam (TV series version, not just the movies) sounded better. It's my general impression that most early/mid 80s (TV series) anime soundtracks "suck", with Macross being the one exception.

Violence: much ado about nothing, really. May be shocking to people who have not seen a lot of anime, but even the most grotesque images so far seem rather tame. We are still in the innocent, pre-Golden Age of anime (the songs make that pretty clear). Sure, it would be difficult to edit the show for American TV, even if it out came after Robotech.

Dialogue: as suspected, little ettempt was made to "translate" the eps prior to adapting Voltron, if at all, as there appears to be very little in common. No wonder so much of the dialogue in Voltron seemed so heavily stilted, forced, awkwardly paced, or otherwise completely out of context with on-screen action or facial expressions.

I'm never going to remember the Golion names. The five pilots in particular have names that all sound alike. I'm used to watching my anime subtitled and remembering who's who, but I'm afriad I'm always going to know these people as "Keith", "Lance", etc. That said:

Is Coran a really intense individual, or what? When he attacked the Golion force in the middle of talking about Zarkon, I thought I had suddenly drifted into a parrallel universe.

They really HATE Zarkon in this version, don't they? Princess goes on about how she hates the Empire while she still has yet to ask the Golion force for their names.

The whole flashback on Earth kinda lacked reality. "It was a war!" I dunno... I still don't understand who these kids are, why they're wearing civilion clothes, or how a war like that "just happened" while they were away and missed it. Sorry... I've gotten used to 'real robot' animes over the years. Anyway, this kind of scene requires a gradual buildup of discovery... and dialogue such as "it was a war!" is about as offensively on-the-nose as you can possibly get.

Villians... yeah, they were pretty boring. Not only that, but is Zarkon "pure" evil or what? We kinda already knew that from the flashbacks we get in 'The Sleeping Princess', but just humor me for a moment:

Personally, I've never believed in good or evil. That's why when I visit a fictional world that deals with such concepts, I hope for some kind of philosophical discussion regarding what they actually mean and why the characters choose as they do. Because this in my mind is what separates intelligent storytelling from Saturday morning cartoon fare. 'Star Wars' I consider to be borderline: it tries to have some philosophy to it, but it often dips into cartoonland (how can the Emperor honestly believe that the Dark Side is really "all that" if he's "perceptive" enough to taunt Luke using the cartoon dialogue that he has?).

Problem with American cartoons, is that "evil" is often meanigless since nobody ever seems to get hurt. Plus the villains frequently *brag* about being evil, which really goes against the kind of self-justification you expect from people who are morally bankrupt. With Voltron, you at least believed it was *possible* people might actually get hurt, and the villains were deliciously cruel and colorful. That said, I doubt Zarkon or Hagar (as they appear in Voltron) could ever do more than spit in a child's face and send him running home to mommy. Lotor was more dangerous because he was twisted by desires that all of us can relate to.

But while Golion's Zarkon and Hagar seem way more evil than their Voltron counterparts, I really hoped there would be some kind of, I don't know... method to their vileness. I guess that was just too much to expect. End of rant.

Looking forward to watching the rest of it. Smiler

While I do prefer Voltron, especially for the music, I will say that Sincline's story (Lotor in Voltron) is A LOT stronger and tragic in Golion, and since he is my favorite character, he is kind of the reason I have decided to buy these discs.

The only reason MGS4 would appear on the X-Box 360 is if Kojima wanted to paint the sky red.

Well, I finished watching the eps. I watched some of them at 2X the speed just to get through it. I enjoyed them a lot, and appreciate the real true backstory. I think my favorite episode was Episode 17. I enjoyed that storyline about the two planets. Also, I really enjoyed the Princess's personality here. She was way too whiny in Voltron. In Golion, there is much more of a theme of her growing into the role and wanting to be a warrior as the last Altean heir. I also like the fact that all the Beastmen have names, and personally i think "JOOOOOOOOOOO-KEN" (yeah i know i spelled it wrong) gives "Form BlazingSword!" a run for its money.

Oh, and did anyone notice Paul Haberman in the Special Thanks section? Isn't that the same guy that sold Golion bootlegs as Henshin, or am I thinking of someone else?

Paul Haberman - up that is him . He's a nice guy, and the only person who had any of those episodes at the time.

Here are some of my views (based only on the first disc):

1) When compared to Voltron, I would say that Voltron rocked it with the music and SFX department. Also, I preferred the "robeats'" voiceover in Voltron over the non-expressive grunts in Golion

2) Also noticed how "slow' moving the battle sequences are without the music or the talk over of "moves" and weaponry call out by the force?

3) Peter Cullen made a better King Alfor. For some reason, the japanese voice actor was just not compelling and sounded like he REALLY was dead. For a King, you'd imagine to have someone to have a really deep commanding voice.

4) Yes its nice to see the Beastman have actual names. -- means more work for me in updating my site ^_^

More to come as view the discs.

3)

Finished episode 14.

It's nice to not have Pidge squeaking "it's a robeeeeast!!" in every episode. I also like just the name "deathblack beastman" a lot better. Probably because it doesn't sound like it means anything. razz

Just a side note that I have to share: I was over at my local Wally World and asked about Go Lion. The clerk was saying he doesn't think they have it, but personally he preferred "Space Voltron" better. lol

Thank the Creator my DVD's from Amazon had all three disks!

Go-Lion on DVD is a ten year dream-come-true for me, so I can't help but be delighted even if the set is bare bones as far as extras go.

Watching Go-Lion has given me a new respect for Voltron. It was so creative of them to combine Go-Lion and Dairugger XV into something new while retaining elements of the original shows.

So far, Go-Lion has not been as gruesome as I was expecting, but then we haven't come to the Red Beret Robots episode yet either. I love the profanity and laughed out loud when Fala called DeathHell an SOB. I also laughed in that episode when Shirogane told her to shut up and pray--I always wondered why Allura looked annoyed in that moment in Voltron. I also liked Shirogane calling Honerva the b-word as he attacks her.

My favorite episode so far has been the introduction of Amue/Romelle and Planet Heracles/Pollux.

I've also enjoyed learning the Go-Lion names of the Robeasts and the supporting characters.

The Go-Lion episodes also seem shorter and more focused. It's neat to see where the original animation sequences that got re-used a lot in Voltron came from (like Zarkon talking to Haggar).

Did the same voice actor who does Chibi/Pidge do Goku in Dragonball Z? They sound very similar.

Speaking of voice acting, Go-Lion has also given me a new appreciation for the voice actors of Voltron. With the exception of Chibi, the Go-Lion team members all sound basically the same. I never thought I'd prefer the American voices, though it is nice to have chicks voicing the small female roles instead of Michael Bell's falsetto. What an awesome thing it would be to have the classic voice actors dub the translated Go-Lion. Never happen, though. I realize now how much life the original voice actors put into the Voltron characters, especially BJ Ward in my opinion.

Can't wait 'til August!
