Meredith took a different direction with this cover and focused on the human struggle rather then the big robots. What do you think?

Erm.... wow, that's...uh... different.

Actually, I don't like it. Some of the cover art for Voltron or Golion/Dairugger I thought were kinda "eh", but this is the first I actually dislike. For start, it looks like something I might find on the cover of a comic book, not as a dvd cover. Second, it strikes me as gratuitously violent. I don't mind seeing violent content, but this covers strikes me as saying "HEY, LOOK AT HOW VIOLENT AND BLOODY WE ARE!!!!1!!1!"

I mean, I'll still pick it up, but geez...

*sigh* I dunno... I don't mean to be too critical, since as an artist I understand how it feels when you just can't please everyone. As clearly demonstrated in her work, Meredith is very talented, and this really is a well done illustration, but I just don't think it was a good choice for a DVD cover *at all*. I haven't seen through the end of Vehicle Voltron yet, so I honestly don't know what scene this is from, or how significant it is in the story's climax, but it just seems too random and unfitting for a DVD cover. I don't understand what would motivate a layout like this, much like the covers for GoLion DVD Volumes 2 and 3. These scenes that are taken right from the show are simply too obscure and random to be featured on the covers of such limited volume sets.

I think a much better choice in this case would have been to feature Aki, Walter, and Keats shown in some iconic layout or pose, maybe with Captain Ise standing honorably behind them, overshadowing them in the background. Maybe also include the Rugger Guard beside him. Then, at least it's not just another picture of Dairugger, but it still presents the key human(oid) characters in a positive, noble fashion without focusing on a single scene straight from the series.

In a nutshell, would this make a good movie poster? Does it appeal perhaps to both diehard and casual fans alike? What is the relevance of the events being illustrated? Would average passers-by recognize anything on it should they browse past it on DVD store shelves?

Once again, the art is nicely done, but these are all things that come to mind when I look at this.

That's something I forgot to mention. Whatever misgivings I might have had about Golion cover 2 and 3, they did at least featured key players. This cover has... just a couple of random grunts. I really don't see why anyone would find a cover of grunts better or more interesting than a coverful of recognizable characters.

I'm not sure, but I *THINK* it's lifed from episode 20. At least that's the only episode I can recall offhand with an "attack on the alliance base" plot. (Well, there is the "Attack on GG" episode, but that thing in the background sure doesn't look like the moon)

Thanks Aaron. I agree about your comparison between the Golion covers and this one.

I took a few minutes to put together an example of a layout that I think would have been more appropriate for this second volume. This is what I was trying to explain in my previous post.

I agree with Aaron and REX-203 about the first cover. It seems out of place most of all. I understand what Meredith was trying to do which is great (she is a very talented artist) but it just doesn't fit well in my opinion. Not to mention people who would be new to the series won't be looking for it. Those who will want to buy may pass it up completely without prior knowledge of what it looked like. I like REX's rendition a lot better, it's recognizable and it fits.

Maybe for the last cover you could use Planet Galveston evacuation scene?

Nice artwork, but ultimately I don't think it's really suitable as a cover as it feels out of place.

I think the black-haired 'grunt' is meant to be Captain Ise (Commander Hawkins).

You did that? That's pretty awesome!

I'm not fond of the new cover art either. DXV isn't even that bloody a series, from what we've seen so far. Still the artwork is what it is... I'd rather just accept it than have another delay.

I'm trying to see it, but I just can't. It still looks like some nameless grunt to me. REX-203's art does a better job of invoking Captain Ise.

BTW, REX-203, I really like the concept artwork you presented. Really invokes the idea of space-exploration, "to boldy go" etc etc. (actually, I wonder if that layout would be better suited as the cover for a "complete series" set, rather than the middle of a three-volume set)

Cool cover, but I'm not going to buy it from voltron.com just for an alternate cover. I'd rather save the $15.

I agree with the majority. It's a nice work of art, but not fitting for a DVD cover for a series that really doesn't depict what that cover would say it does.

Meet IceFyre, Ingeir Autha Surr, Mia-Tuk, Denver, Draven, Nessy, & Sierra!

They would love some attention. Clicky clicky please!

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I thought you meant it was a voltron.com exclusive cover, and that the retail cover was going to be different.

I do agree, it just does not fit the theme of the series, but I am still more disappointed in the fact that they are using standard DVD cases as opposed to the cardboard stuff with got with Golion and Tekkaman Blade.
