Resident Ego-Maniacal Mod![]() |
I picked up Newtype USA this afternoon and watched the first episode of Voltron that came with the magazine (I still don't have the actual DVD set itself).
Now, the Voltron DVDs were sourced from the same GoLion negatives that TOEI used to air the show recently. Well, upon watching the Newtype DVD I noticed that the colour quality on the Media Blasters DVD is inferior to the GoLion DVD-R recordings of the series. Here are some comparison examples: These comparison pics clearly show that the GoLion DVD-Rs have far better colour quality than the MB DVDs despite the fact both DVDs were sourced from the same negatives. The one with Pidge is the real standout -- look how muted the blue is and how pale Pidge's green clothing is in the MB screenshot. Comments? |

Where did you get the Golion DVD-Rs? Were those the ones that were being offered here a few months back?
There is a noticeable difference. -Moe |

Interesting comparison there.

Hmmm...
I wouldn't say "inferior". I'd say interrupted differently. It looks like MB really adjusted the black levels in the images, and used that as a basis for sharpeness. Look at the MB's super contrast vs. the Toei. I'm totally happy with the MB cut. I think if anything they applied uniform color correcting techniques across the board. I would have to disagree with you completely...but respectfully^^. |

erm, I guess it depends on your taste for shades of the color pallette but imho, the media blasters is the superior set. It's clearer, for starters.
Just not seeing it, dude. |

The MB images are superior. I don't even know why someone would think otherwise. Whatever...

Aside from the Pidge picture, I think the color looks better in the MB examples.

Har de har, K2C!
Yup, it's definitely clearer and sharper, no arguments there ... the GoLion image is softer because of it being a home DVD-R recording of a not-100%-perfect digital broadcast, which is never up to professional-quality standards.
Got 'em from Coldwin. And yes, they were the ones that were offered here a long time ago. |

Exactly. And since we have the same set, it's my understanding they were recorded off a television broadcast at that. If a comparison is going to be made, it would probably be more prudent to compare like products - i.e. whenever GoLion comes out on "real" dvd not a bootleg. Otherwise, yeah, people are probably going to wonder wtf you're smoking I still think the colors are better in the MB set anyway, for what it's worth. Even with Pidge. : shrug : |

Just to be clear, I'm not dissing the MB set at all. Overall, MB have done a great job on the DVD from what I've seen (and heard) so far, though I do feel the colour quality could be better.
Yup, they were recorded from TOEI's digital channel.
True. The only reason I made comparison pics from the GoLion DVD-Rs is because the TOEI airings used the same masters as MB did. If either company had used different masters, I wouldn't have even queried the colour differences I noticed and wouldn't have put up comparison pics either.
I kinda doubt that seeing as a few folks here noticed the colour difference too. |

well then just wtf am i smoking? what is this stuff and where did i get it? It's burning my eyes!
what? (sorry. I just threw this in there to mix things up a bit.) I think the MB looks great, and I think people opinions of 'correct color' varies tremendously. SGB, you might just prefer things not-white balanced and not so sharp. I dunno. I think MB rocked it. But i think they had to make decisions on the balance across the board. Also, I found this interesting. http://www.toledo-bend.com/colorblind/Ishihara.html Send me GoLion! Haha. |

I prefer sharp pictures. I just don't think MB got the colour quite right. But I'll reserve proper judgement until I've seen the actual DVD. I'm starting to regret making this thread. |
