I'm curious, for those of you that bought Golion and are buying Dairugger, are you (or did you) keeping your Voltron DVDs? I still have them, but the more I think about it, I doubt I'm ever going to watch Voltron again unless it is on TV since any time I'm going to watch the series it is going to be Golion/Dairugger. Hell, I cannot make it through the last two discs to VV due to its terrible dub. So anyway, are you going to keep both, just go with the Jp versions? Do you watch them both regularly?

I still have my Voltron dvds, though I haven't watched them in a while. I think after I get Dairugger, I won't watch the Voltron version much either. For one, I prefer watching a show in it's original version, as you get how it was made and intended (plus, from experience, I find dubs to be stilted). Second, knowing what was cut and changed makes the cheeseiness of Voltron stand out all the more so(Golion had its fair share of cheese, but at least it didn't recycle the same ending five times, or make an excessive attempt to assure us that nothing bad happened).

Keep 'em? Sure, why not?
Mostly, I've become aware thanks to GoLion that there really aren't that many episodes that have 'replay' value (in either version). I think GoLion has fewer enjoyable eps than LV season 1. But those eps, with their original dialogue and nuance, I find I like much better than their LV counterparts. The added violence, I could take it or leave it. Sometimes it's more fun to simply 'know' that a guard just got decapitated because Allura's eye's bugged out. The last two eps, I enjoy the violence just because it becomes way too much. Poor Hagar's cat. But GoLion, I would mostly stick with the 'arc' episodes. Whereas Voltron, I might add a few more eps to the list. On the other hand, there are also certain eps in LV I just cannot stand because of their dubbing, but are quite good in GoLion. "A Pretty Spy" being one of them. It's kinda like the original Star Trek. This ep, I like better remestered. That ep, they should've left alone. It's also worth mentioning that I think GoLion has (slightly) more interesting good guys, while LV has much more colorful bad guys. I'm REALLY looking forward to DXV, however. Most of the VV episodes that annoy me, do so because I 'kinda' have a better idea what's going on in the overall series continuity than a lot of the writers did. But maybe I'll again find that there are quite a few eps I just don't like either way, period. |

I kind of see where you are coming from samwiseb, as I agree about the violence, but I just think the villians in Golion are far better. I mean, learning that the reason Sincline is in love with Fala because she resembles his mother, and that entire plot line is what finally made me like Golion a lot more than Voltron.

Definitly would keep them. Don't get rid of them, just keep them in your library. You might think you'll never watch them again but you never know one day you might feel like watching some Voltron and if you don't have them anymore your gonna regret it.

Of course I'm keeping mine. Just like I have my Robotech DVD's Even though I have the complete original japanese (with english dub and/or subtitles) of Macross, Macross 2, Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross Dynamite 7, Macross Zero, Southern Cross and Mospeada. No need to get rid of them - always enjoy revisiting both the originals and the US versions.

Wow, you are able to stomach Macross 7 and Zero? I'm impressed. Both of them are terrible series in my opinion. Macross 7 had potential, but then it just became a redundancy fest. As for Zero, yeah, well, all they cared about was giving you pretty effects with no story to go with it. Zero made absolutely no sense whatsoever and did nothing to even act as if it were a prequel to Macross. |

I intend on keeping them, as the fact is, I was hooked on Voltron as a kid, and it brings back good memories watching it. Go-Lion doesn't give the memories because it isn't the same. Yes, Voltron is cheesy, but it's something from the past that can't be replaced.
The feeling of waking up at 0400 to watch the other Voltron, the excitement, and the smile on my face as I remember my parents wondering what in the hell I was doing up watching TV at 0400. |

Definitely be keeping them. I have always loved the characters and the music from Voltron. I love the tin packages and they look quite nice atop my DVD rack, even my mother-in-law thought so and she has no idea what a Voltron even is. Plus, I've made my wife a Voltron fan (as well as a GoLion fan) so I'd keep them for that reason too.

Well from what I've read GoLion isn't a particularly good anime anyways.
Also Voltron is not considered a bad hackjob of a dub of GoLion but more of an adaptation similar to how Power Rangers is an adaptation of Super Sentai and not a dub of it. It started being based off GoLion but it became its own universe that continued on and not just an inferior version of GoLion. So yeah for me I don't care about GoLion and will only be keeping Voltron DVDs. |

I'll go ahead and echo the sentiments of others.
They're different shows. A lot of thought and care went into Voltron, and I have more of a sentimental attachment to it. I'm not sure I would like GoLion half as much as I do if it weren't for the nostalgic good will granted it by my love for Voltron. It takes me some time when watching an episode of GoLion to disconnect it from my memories of the Voltron version. I'm usually able to enjoy it more after I've done this. At the same time, oddly, I like looking for--and recognizing--the difference from one show to the other. It makes me feel a little like an armchair detective. When I was younger, I was automatically dismissive of Americanized versions of anime. If I knew the original's violence had been played down, I was even more dismissive. I've come to regret this. I think I wanted to give off an air of authority and maturity, and I didn't believe this could be done without coming across as violently disapproving of the Americanization of cartoons that originated elsewhere. Sometimes, a hack editing job is done, and/or the voice acting is uninspired. It's a regrettable thing when it happens, but at least we're in an age where we can do a little research and find out for ourselves what we're missing (and proceed from there, if we feel we're missing enough to warrant checking out the original). I suppose I feel some reverence is due shows like Voltron, Robotech, and Tranzor Z, since I would have had no exposure to the original shows without them. That's not an argument for keeping the DVDs of the American versions of the shows on your shelf, I guess, but if you derive any pleasure from the American versions whatsoever, I'd argue for keeping them. Otherwise, pass them on to someone who might appreciate them. For me, Voltron served as a gateway show. It opened me up to a wider world of animation. I don't see why it can't still serve in this capacity. (I don't know, though. The animation style seems firmly rooted in the late seventies/early eighties. Some people might pass on it for this reason alone.) |
