I thought I would give you guys a little more info on the set.
There will be only 1,299 packs with 300 of them going to World Events Productions, presumably to be sold on Voltron.com, making for only 999 packs available direct from 5finity...which have all sold out. For those not familliar with 5finity products, there are no base or regular chase cards, nor boxes or cases. They package at least 1 sketch card in a pack and that is the product. Some of the random Special Packs include: 60 RARE Sketch Cards 1:22 packs 50 Hot Packs with 2-3 sketches 1:26 50 Form Voltron Cards* 1:26 20 Galaxy Parallel Sketch Cards 1:65 10 Commission Request Redemptions 1:130 10 Animation Cel Sketch Cards 1:130 plus unannounced inserts and suprises! Overall odds of getting a Special Pack are less than 1:7 packs. *Form Voltron Chase: There are 10 specially marked Lion cards in each of 5 colors; Red, Green, Blue, Yellow and Black, (1:26 overall, 1:130 each specific color). Find one of each color and you will receive one of only 10 specially marked Voltron sketch cards. The first image that Admin has listed is actually a 9 card puzzle done by artist Frankie B. Washington (larger pic below) and the subsequent ones are from artist Jamie Snell. Here are a few more approved sample cards Juan Fontanez Lak Lim Anthony Hochrein Chad CicconiBeing very well versed in the sketch card market, I can tell you that if you have a chance to buy these packs, do not think twice. As I mentioned above, the 999 packs that 5finity was selling direct are sold out...in 12 hours. I am VERY happy to have been home that do so I was able to get some. Happy Hunting! |

Where were they sold from? I can't find any kind of store or sale link on the 5finity web site.
Were they sold direct to fans, or to retailers/resellers? How come no one announced the sale details to us, the fandom? Didn't you want our money too? How much did/will they cost? Does "Coming February 15, 2010" actually mean "Check our website every day because they will be long gone before then?" |

First of all, I do not work for 5finity, I am a customer of theirs who has had nothing but great experiences with them.
At this time, 5finity does not have any type of ordering system on their website, so information is sent to folks who request it via email. Many people (collectors and dealers alike) who received the initial email were shut out as the demand was so high even though they put a cap on orders to prevent anybody from purchasing all of the inventory. Before piling on the folks at 5finity, please keep in mind that they are a new (less than 1 year) company that is marketing a product much differently than any other trading card company in the past. They are still trying to get a feel for just how popular their products will be. Hopefully, the 300 packs that went to WEP will end up in the store for sale. If that is the case, I would assume that they would retail close to the MSRP of $24.95 a pack. Other than that, I would say to be on the lookout for single sketches and packs on ebay right arround the Feb. 15 release date as many folks (including myself) will be posting a fair bit of what they open. |

Thanks igman7. Sorry I had the wrong idea; the level of information in your post indeed gave me the impression that you were an insider of some sort.

I don't think I'm feeling the "sketch" aesthetic of these things. The artists are certainly talented, of course; I just think I'd rather see them use another medium that gives a more polished look than the the art style seemingly prescribed by this product (which looks to me like mostly charcoals or colored pencils).
When I think 'awesome art trading cards', my mind goes to the old Marvel Masterpieces series circa 1992. That was some gorgeous painted art. So, unfortunately, I think I might give these a pass. |

While everyone needs to make a decision for themselves, to compare these to 1992 Marvel Masterpieces would be comparing apples to onions. Those MM cards, while stunningly painted by an industry icon in Joe Jusco, were for mass production with tens of thousands of each card being printed. Each and every one of the cards done for this set are original one of a kind hand crafted piece of art.
That I know of, mediums being used by the artists on this set include pencils (colored and non), pens, markers, watercolors, and oils. Seeing that the artists receive well less than $10 per card (many of the artists spend 2-3 hours per card), I belive that what they put out is absolutely stunning. Grant, while you may stay away from pack buying, you might want to check out single cards that end up for sale as some just might tickle your fancy. For those buying packs, keep in mind that if you end up with something that you don't like, there will likely be a number of collectors all over the world out there willing to trade or buy them from you. |
