The tone of the Nolan/Bale movies is not as original as you think. Since the 80s and maybe earlier, the Batman comics have been generally pretty dark and gritty (with exceptions now and again).

I don't know how old you are, but the '92-'95 Batman: The Animated Series was pretty dark, and is not far off in tone from the new movies. If you've never seen it, you should.

(Lord, that was nearly 20 years ago? I feel old now.)

I loved Batman: The Animated Series when it was on. I remember watching after getting home from school (that would be high school).

I want the Voltron movie to be more grown up but I also don't want to see a bastardization of the characters. Adding to the characters, that's great. Stripping down the characters and rebuilding them into something opposite what they originally were....doesn't work for me.

I will say this about the Transformers movies, I've been very pleased with the way Optimus, Megatron and Starscream's personalities have retained qualities of the original plus a little extra added. That's what the VF should be, a little extra seasoning to spice it up a notch.

The biggest inconsistency for me was that it was declared Voltron had to be rebuilt, yet it was alluded in one scene that Voltron still exists on Arus.

My problems with the Marks' script were inconsistencies, cliche's and just total character f#$k ups. Below is just a few of them.

  • Marks script says the Robeasts defeated the Earth's military forces and took over the planet in one day. It took the aliens in Independence Day more time than that.
  • Keith states that the military forces around the world were defeated because the military forces of the world could coordinate because of language barriers. Bulls**t, Independence Day shows the world's military powers coordinating a strike.
  • Marks turned Keith into a complete jackhole. I can understand not wanting to make him like the toon version, but the comic version gave him better background and didn't turn him into a d*ck. And that is only one drastic and extreme character change.
  • The movie uses scenes that are very similar to previous sci-fi movies. There is a scene with Lance and Keith that reminds me of the underground scenes from Terminator.
  • The movie doesn't need to take place in New York. And while we're at it, Los Angeles and San Diego can be ruled out as well. Going from New York to Mexico seems kind of pointless to me as well.
  • Marks literally destroys the integrity of Sven and Coran
  • Seriously though, if the lions are going to be built on earth, even post-war, don't you think the remaining military would be involved and they would use something other than junk parts?

The script's cons outweighed the pros in this case, for me anyway. I do hope it gets a major rewrite or it is thrown out.

I hope so too.

A re-write would be fine, on the concession that studios might not want to get behind a 'space opera' let alone give it the kind of budget that Voltron would need (although I would hope that the new Star Trek movie would give studio execs more faith). In either event, even a space opera would likely have a large chunk of its story set on a contemporary-looking Earth, just to make the whole thing as relatable as possible.

Regarding your points, I don't consider ID4 to be that great a movie (I've never felt inclined to own it), so I wouldn't take it as the authority on what would or wouldn't happen if we were invaded by XTs. I'll confess I liked the whole 'language barrier' thing probably because I didn't give it too much thought, and it seemed to tie in perfectly with the 'need for unity' theme that has always been a core element of Voltron (and just one day sounds about right for world governments/militaries to miss their window to coordinate together).

I can see what you mean about characters, scenes and places seeming lifted from too many past movies we've seen. I think one reason NY and LA are often used, is because they are both densely populated cities that are almost instantly recognizable. San Francisco or Las Vegas might be good places to start a post-apocalyptic movie.

I completely agree about the lions. With the kinds of things they need to do in in a Voltron movie (not the least of which is standing erect as a single giant robot), it's got to be visually conceivable that they have some serious structural integrity. Homemade lions built out of scrap parts just wouldn't cut it. You need a still-functioning military/industrial complex. You need the underground equivelant of either Stark Industries or Wayne Enterprises.

I've just today thought up a treatment for a 'space opera' version of Voltron that combines the premise of Justin Marks' script with what I remember from the Devil's Due comics. And it's totally kick-@$$, though fairly obvious in retrospect, and I think it would totally work.

Actually the person who was part of Kickstart was working on a live action film. Even if Kickstart is in animation, there is more than one type of animation that can be use, that includes even computer generated action.

United Talent Agency is involved in getting screenwriter. Also in a interveiw which occurred on November 11,2009 the person interveiwed said:

He had been in a meeting with Atlas Entertainment and he was wanting to drop some names. He however said there is a lot of major or well established screenwriters, actors and actresses, and decision makers in Hollywood who grew up with Voltron.

If the you want read the interview goto VOLTRON movie bing if your brouser is capabable of accessing bing. Bing is a very good search engine. I believe is is on the 19th screen or in that neighborhood.

Here is more information which I looked up.

Jason Netter was a producer for the movie WANTED and is part of Kickstart Productions.

Richard Suckle was a producer for 'THE INTERNATINAL' and the live action 'SCOOBY DOO.'

Charles Roven helped produce 'THE DARK KNIGHT' and 'GET SMART'.

I am not sure about Steve Alxander because I couldn't find anything other than the name. All I know he is part of the trio and of course Ted Koplar joined the trio.

The movie WANTED was a major movie and I saw a part of it.

That article that I just read -thanks for the link to it- misses one production that Atlas was apart of. Charles Roven, who is part of ATLAS, was involved in the production of BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT. By I do like the picture in that article.

Thanks for the link. But I am a bit sceptic about what its says about the movie to be true as WEP themselves actually hasn't been quoted or the fact the information is not on the website. Yeah I know the information about Charles Roven is true cause of that. But until WEP bring out a official statement I will continue to be. I understand the tight lipped sure but would be nice if WEP allowed a bit more "correct" information.

As far as the new series is concern that is cool but has anyone seen a trailer to it? What I read on the new series I must admit I assumed it would be a remake of the old classic only better. Smiler

Yeah, I caused that to happen.

That page also links to a dead Thundercats script as well, should you be interested.

Thanks but been there done that, not planning to repeat the process. LOL! IF Mark's script is gone and IF it was the proper script to beginning with, yes I am having my doubts. I defiantly won't be going back to it. I don't know who is worse writer Stephanie Meyer from Twilight fame or Justin Marks. *shivers*
