Sick, Evil, Perverted and very Twisted, yep that is me. |
I know the movie, seen it years ago. I should come with a warning label but it wore off years ago. LOL! http://www.youtube.com/user/lovelyl1976 http://photobucket.com/voltron |

The script wasn't *that* bad.
My basic problems were due to lame character cliches. He turned Lance into Wise-cracking Black Guy and Pidge into an autistic savant. Also, New York. I'm really sick of New York. And I wish it had explained why exactly there were Arabs in Mexico. At any rate, it looks like it could have been better than Bay's Transformers (not that that's a huge accomplishment). |

Forgive me if this sounds wrong. I mean nothing by it. If they were to change the race of one of the characters I'd pick Hunk. I could imagine Hunk as a black man before Lance. Lance just always struck me as a gawky (but funny and cool)white guy. In all due respect though, I would keep the characters as they are. I say this mainly because I don't want the movie to become about political correctness. I'm just shooting off my mouth so please don't accuse me of being racist. I'm not opposed to having one of the force being black, I'm just talking about character consistency. As we all know this script needs to change, the characters races are the least of the problems in it.

There are Production companies attached. They are the following:
Atlantia Canarias ('Atlas Entertainment') Kickstart Entertainment Atlas Entertainment includes Charles Roven who did 'The Dark Knight.' They brought on board United Talent Agency who is going to work on find screenwriter. They are involved with Ted Koplar who is part of World Events Production. |

I do remember reading that, I forget how long ago. The part about Kickstart never made sense... aren't they supposed to be an animation studio? They were involved in the animated Voltron series that hasn't happened yet. I have a friend who pitched his screenplay (not Voltron) to Atlas a couple years ago. They seemed interested in it, but then he never heard back from them on where to send it. So it's interesting to find out that they actually exist. |

No misinterpretation, Zariel. I get what you're saying.
My point was that "Wise-cracking Black Guy" and "Quirky Child Savant" are tired archetypes. When I read it, I thought, hell, if you're going to blackify a character, why not Keith? I think that would work pretty well, actually. Then again, I don't think Keith (as defined by the toon) had that much personality anyway; it's hard to do wrong by a character that's so weakly defined. As long as he has generic leader qualities and the respect of his teammates, you're good. To me, the personalities of toon Keith and toon Jeff are pretty indistinguishable. |

Except that Jeff had more attitude. (We need a thumbs-up emoticon here)
I think it's inevitable that the characters will have to be changed for the movie, just to give them something more than what they had in the 'toon when they were mere Super Sentai archetypes. Also, movies are all about character arcs and Life Changing Events. Whereas the cartoon characters pretty much remained the same people they were throughout the entire series. I'd have to read the script again; I don't remember Lance being a wisecracker (certainly not like the car $alesman and 'donut' guy from Michael Bay's 'Transformers'). Pidge was just annoying however. Why do all postapocalyptic children have to be mute? Are they crabby because they're not eating their vegetables or something? |

Kickstart have no involvement with the live-action movie. |

Can you imagine if we made our own movie? Of course hire the best special effects people out there. That would be something! Maybe something scary, but better than the first script.

Wow, this thread has seen a lot of action lately.
My problems with the Marks' script were inconsistencies, cliche's and just total character f#$k ups. Below is just a few of them.
The script's cons outweighed the pros in this case, for me anyway. I do hope it gets a major rewrite or it is thrown out. |

hmm,,, that script reminds me of the one version i heard of for batman.. where Bruce lives on the streets, Alfred is a black mechanic, and the batmobile is a tricked out pimp-mobile... or something to that effect.
There is something to be said for making the film accessible to new audiences, but just demolishing the source material and making the film dark like they did with the new Batman films (which i do really enjoy) isnt always the best approach to take. I think the challenge with having the film try to follow the initial storyline to well is all that time being captured by Zarkon and then finding the Keys and the lions... I could see that whole section being streamlined and the pilots being soldiers in the Arusian (sp?) army, or "destined civilians" so then you dont have to explain away how they were trained to be Voltron pilots, when there was no Voltron to train on, if i remember the first few episodes correctly. Its a matter of balancing the exposition with the action, so you can have time seeing lion combat and voltron combat, but still get in some character development, and drama of trying to deal with Zarkon's forces before accessing the lions. All that said though, and I gotta think the lions need to be majestic and works of art... not rusty tin cans. And speaking of fan films and a lack of a director.. there is this guy in NYC named Eddie Lebron that just seems like he could do this if he was given the chance and the cash. He has done a bunch of indie films, as well as this: http://www.megamanfilm.com/ I will reserve final judgement until i see that film and some of his other ones... but ya know, he may just have that balance of fanboy and artist that a project like this needs. |

The tone of the Nolan/Bale movies is not as original as you think. Since the 80s and maybe earlier, the Batman comics have been generally pretty dark and gritty (with exceptions now and again). I don't know how old you are, but the '92-'95 Batman: The Animated Series was pretty dark, and is not far off in tone from the new movies. If you've never seen it, you should. (Lord, that was nearly 20 years ago? I feel old now.) |
