I've seen quite a few reviews of Marks' now-discarded script, but is it actually findable out on the wild internet somewhere?
Bad or good, I'd like to check it out. I haven't actually read any reviews; I'd like to form my own opinion of it. |

Ugh, this whole waiting thing for the movie or for the movie information is terrible! It reminds me of what's going on with Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3

Sick, Evil, Perverted and very Twisted, yep that is me. |
I know what you mean, I wish WEP can or would realise more information on the movie, like what is going on. I'm curious about the new script, if there is a new one, cast etc. I use to ask but I gave up. I should come with a warning label but it wore off years ago. Well, since I really do not have the time to review 79 pages of messages on this subject.. and also for the good of any other new users that may show up, I have a few questions to ask:
1. When was the project announced? 2. Is there a director attached? 3. Is there a concept artist and/or a visual effects studio attached? 4. Does WEP have the copyright issues worked out with the original creators of GoLion in order to be able to use that IP and those base designs for this film? 5. Is there an attached production company? 6. Do we know if the film will be focusing on Lion Voltron, Vehicle Voltron, or a new type of Voltron? If anyone could answer any of those questions, that would be great.. I know I would appreciate it, and future visitors to the forums would to im sure |

1. A couple of years back. Don't recall when exactly. 2. No director attached. 3. No concept artist or fx studios are attached. 4. WEP owns the copyright to Golion lock stock and barrel, so there should be no copyright issues whatsoever. 5. None that I know of. 6. Will most likely focus solely on Lion Voltron. |

Thanks Much SGB.
So basically, what your saying is... barring announcements from WEP... we are still a good while off from seeing anything in the pipeline huh? Oh well, bring on the board game!! |

What? When did that happen? I thought WEP merely licensed Golion. I remember reading some time ago that Toei was suing WEP, as they thought the cartoon rights that WEP had did not also include live-action movie rights. Ah, here's something to that effect, from 2008: http://www.animenewsnetwork.co...-action-voltron-film I find it hard to believe that Toei would decide to sell the Golion rights completely. |

Oh man, I'd forgotten all about that lawsuit! Looks like WEP might have copyright issues with the character design of Voltron/Golion.
Very late 90s/early 2000s, I think. admin might be able to explain more about the lawsuit and the ownership rights issue. |

When you see issues like this one between Toei and WEP or the Japanese producers of Macross and Harmony Gold... ya gotta wonder if it would be easier just to reach and hash this kinda stuff out before the LAM announcements are made.
I get that it would affect the American companies share of the profits, but when it comes down to it, if it wasn't for the Japanese creators, there would be no American series, and since the Japanese can be very prideful of Japanese projects, you could probably get financial and creative backing from the original studios. |

I'm having difficulty seeing how WEP could possibly 'own' GoLion. To me it just doesn't follow. Toei would've spent a LOT of money producing the show back in the day; what has WEP done besides license and dub it? It sounds almost like HG insinuating that they own Macross (no one's exactly clear on whether they've ever actually officially, directly, explicitely tried to claim that or not).
There was a script. We're not sure whatever became of it, or how much of it was still under consideration when last Voltron was being talked about. KBL's signature still links to his review of it, and many of us have PDFs of it. I have it; KBL has it. Most of us hated it. I think I probably liked it the most out of all of us, but only conditionally. It basically *sifted* through all the core elements of Voltron (something I think a live action adaptation would have to do anyway, and more so than I suspect a lot of people would be prepared to admit or accept) and combined most of them into something that was undeniably Voltron, but still radically different (and for most of us, too much so). What M. Knight Shyamalan's film 'Unbreakable' was to your conventional superhero movie, this script was to Voltron. And though I liked much of it, the writer's other credentials seem at least somewhat questionable. Gone were Zarkon, Hagar, Lotor, and the 25th century setting of the series. Entire script took place on Earth, in the VERY near future (we may have already passed it by now), in a postapocalyptic wasteland. The characters were radically altered to get as far away as possible from your Super Sentai archetypes (for example most of them were international, and ages varied from 12 to 45). And the robot lions were a cross between Constructicon-like constructs and rusted over junkyard parts. Script tried to bring Voltron "down to Earth" as much as possible (a la Batman Begins), but tilted so far in that direction as to actually come back around the other side (with a lot of haphazard attempts at throwing in magic and generic mythology in the second half), making the whole affair seem (in my opinion) quite B-movie-ish at times. Suffice to say, we hope it's at least been through some revisions if not rebooted entirely. But it's defintely worth a read. |

It's worth a read as an educational tool as to how NOT to write a Voltron movie. The script's also useful for toilet paper. |

I didn't know they made printing paper that soft.
I could go for it, if they had a good enough director. A real director (as opposed to a director-for-hire) will say "this script needs another rewrite before it's ready". And then it happens. You could have the perfect adaptation, and a director-for-hire could still mess it up. I want someone who's creative enough and daring enough to be somewhat audacious with the material. I also want to minimize/de-emphasize the Super Sentai elements as much as possible. Justin Mark's script represents one possible extreme, although I'm forced to agree it's too extreme in a lot of areas. Another extreme might be my idea of keeping Planet Arus, but going completely medieval with the production design (have a haunted castle of lions, that sort of thing). And those 'organic' lion robot sketches someone linked to a while back would fit perfectly with that in my opinion. But anyway, it's all about the director. Until there's a director, there's no real news as far as I'm concerned. |
