Sven's injury at the hands of Haggar's Robeast can be interpreted as the consequence of Lance's rashness. Initially, it was Lance who was lured away by the witch, got isolated, and was in grave danger. Fortunately, Sven came to the rescue and bailed Lance out, and consequently suffered his life-altering injuries as a direct consequence.
The series never deals with how Lance took this. On some level, Lance probably would have experienced a degree of "survivor's guilt" for having inadvertently set off the chain of events that led to Sven's injury. It's too bad we never really got to see Lance deal with this issue, especially after the team reunited with Sven later in the series.
I'm sure there's a fanfic out there somewhere that deals with it. Also, in every other episode they had COM link thingies. They could've just used those. Or even told the rest of the gang that they saw the blue cat BEFORE they took off after it. Duh. I'm a bit analytical, sorry

It was either Lance didn't realize it or the editors were trying to make the series to where it was understandable by younger viewers. A child wouldn't be able to understand that. That's my best guess.
As someone who often writes the character of Lance in both fanfiction and on The Legend of Voltron RPG, I don't believe Lance suffers from any form of survivors guilt.
Sure he got into trouble and Sven bailed him out, which resulted in Sven getting severely injured, but the emotions Lance felt were grief and sorrow over losing a friend and fellow soldier. There was no guilt attached to it.
Arus and the Voltron Force were fighting a war. Lives were bound to be lost/altered drastically by that. It was all part and parcel of the nature of the beast. As a soldier, Lance would have been well aware of the fact that he or his friends could die at any point in the situation they were facing. But do I think he felt guilty about what happened to Sven? Absolutely not. Anger and hatred toward Haggar and the war - mostly likely. But not guilt.
And that's all for today two cents.

I don't know about that...doubts can creep into even the strongest of people. He probably would have had moments where he thought it should have been him instead of Sven, or wondered what would have happened had he done something different.
He wouldn't beat himself up about it, likely. But the thoughts probably entered his mind at some point. Was he overwhelmed with guilt? No. Did he ever doubt or second-guess himself? Probably.
In the end, Lance would know it wasn't his fault that Sven got hurt. They were all doing their jobs the best they could. But to say that he didn't replay the events in his head, wondering if he could have done something differently...that would be to say that Lance isn't human.
You are right of course, Rad, and my Lance would feel the same. Everyone gets the "what ifs" from time to time and has his/her weak moments. Lance surely has as well.
