How did you first learn that the toy (Matchbox) even exisisted?

I don't remember exactly, but think the toys were released before the commercials first aired. I think I spotted the mini-version of the lion set first. I didn't buy it because of my drooling fascination of the product photo on the back. I called TRU everyday until the phone lady said it was in stock the following Thanksgiving. I had to beg my folks to get down to the store, and my heart broke when I saw the price $60 price tag on the last Deluxe Lion set. Moments later, a lady asked "are you going to get that one little boy?" I shook my head and handed it over. My cousin took home the mini-vehicle set, but I wasn't impressed.

Ahh what memories. Thought I'd share.

I''m not even sure where I got mine from to be honest or where I heard of the toy from, problably just ran into it at the store. It's a bit hard trying to remember that far back since I was just 5 years old at the time. I just remember it being the best toy I had ever had. Big Grin

I had a bootleg first. Later my dad bought me the Popy when I asked him for the smaller motorized voltron toy.
I never had an actual Matchbox until recently.

I had a Matchbox Voltron when I was a kid! My parents went to a cheapo Macy's-rip-off department store called Alexander's and got one for my brother and I because we did well in school. I think i got it in 1985 (maybe '86). They knew we watched the cartoon and were really into the whole Voltron thing.

I think the one I had as a kid was in the flapless box...

Peeling the sticker!? You were an evil one!

I ruined my Voltron when I was innocently cleaning it. My parents let me clean my Voltron with some alcohol-type solution. Unfortunately for me, that solution took the red paint off the Black lion's chest. That really upset me at the time, I stopped playing with it, then my parents threw it out....

I was a sensetive kid myself. :P Once the chrome started wearing off my set, i didnt want to touch it with a ten foot pole.

What would I give to relieve those days knowing what I know now. Eeker

I didn't know about the Matchbox toys until I was much older. The only Voltron I grew up with was the LJN Vehicle assembler. I was infinitely frustrated as a kid by the fact that he didn't actually transform into anything.

lol i didnt do it for the fun of it, it was coming off already so i just peeled it the rest of the way. I wasnt happy believe me, i was a perfectionist/neat-freak when i was a kid and kept my toys prestine,so that bugged me, my voltron wasnt perfect anymore cry

Man, I really wish I knew what I did with him, that would be awesome to still have my childhood one Roll Eyes
