Check this out; did someone get a deal? Original 1981 Popy Japan Voltron GB-36. Went for $330 and looks like a legit set to me. I was going to watch it and then happened to get real busy that day and missed it and when I saw what it went for I was like "Oh man, wish I would have maybe been there for it - but oh well". Here's the link:

Yea, i bid on it but wasnt going to pay that much. I'd rather pay more for one thats in better shape, tho it wasnt bad, prob worth the 330.

This should have partial chroming of the mid section right?

The response I got from that seller was that this item was a far later make which never featured chromed mid sections and no sharp teeth as well.

I talked to a hobbie seller on Saturday and discussed the many variants of Golions and seems that indeed, all Godaikins are supposerd to have "some" chrome in the mid section on the arms (red and green lion).

Usually the middle piece found in the hinges, while the Popy version had full chrome on not just the mid sections of their body, but their tails as well.

And both definitely should have sharp teeth.

I learned that the Godaikin Golion were imported all around the world while the more rare Popy Golions were originally packaged to be released and sold in Japan only.
This seems to be the consensus so far.

In the end, whether there are some loose screws in the facts or not, if you or any anyone here wants to buy an original Godaikin Golion set or a Popy set (both made in Japan and both carry their gb-36 chrome stickers like the matchbox japan sets), make sure you get your dollars worth. Meaning, look for the chrome, look for the sharp teeth and all the firing buttons each of the lions is supposed to have. (ask sellers to reveal the inside of the yellow lion's ear flaps. Those should have working missle launchers as well. Wink

It could be that only the arms on this set are matchbox japan while the rest are either godaikin or glion. Who knows. But theres definitely something not right whether it be a manufacturer manipulation or seller modification.

thanks for info japanbot, very enlightening... ah!... good thing u never made that decision to pimp up your matchbox!!!...

voltron toys never made it to where i come from, so i've only known of their existence from ebay and the net...

That was a decent deal, yes. =]
A mint set wouldve costed 1000.00 dollars.
This one was in so so condition. 330.00 is not bad. Perfect, even.

It looks like this is a set of the Red and Green lions. Never new Golion came individually and why not pair one leg/arm instead of the two smaller arm lions together.

From translation:

Ok guys, forgive me if I am an utter noob to all this, but I recently have been researching my childhood toy collection and I have come to realize that I have a Poppy Golion purchased in Japan in either 1981 or 1982. I had a terrible time trying to figure out which version it was until Japanbot posted the front box art. I am the original owner, and it has the sharp teeth, firing weapons, chrome mid sections, and all the accesories as well as the original box. Unfortunately it has been stored in my attic for the last 10 years /cower and hide. The lions are all fully working with no damage, but where there is plastic - it has worn considerably from the heat I am guessing. I have no idea what the value of this is or what I should do with it. Is the market for this type of thing going up or holding steady? I can't decide if I should sell it to somebody who would apprechiate it more then me, or just hold on to it. Any input would be greatly apprechiated - especially an idea of what it might be worth.

Thank you

This one guy I know is offering to sell me a boxed LionBot set for $110. Is that a good deal?

technically, 30.00 USDs my friend.

Lionbots are crap. Either variation of the kind.

For 110.00, you might as well save and extra 70.00 and buy a minty one in box for that price.

I bought one of those Lionbot sets theyre selling on ebay now. And YUCK when comparing it to the Matchbox set, let alone the Golion Japan release.

Take my advice, dont get the Lionbot. Save money for a real one. Wink
