Zarkon's Conscience![]() |
Now that the translated Golion eps are coming out, I figured it would be a good idea to have a thread in here to discuss any differences or opinions of what we think of the characters.
Personally, Sincline seems the most engaging, but I do prefer Lotor. I never thought I'd thank American censorship for anything, but without it, the snarky Doomites would not exist. I also took for granted how the xeroxed scenes of Zarkon and Hagar really added to their rapport/personalities. For all their violence, the Galrans are rather "eh." I find myself rooting for the more personable Golion team. I have more to say, but figure this is enough to get the ball rolling. |

Yeah the Golion counterparts don't have half the personality. Daibazaal is the most boring villain in the history of all children's cartoons. How come they put so much effort into making him look cool but then gave him no good dialogue? Let's thank the writers at WEP for making them appealing at least.
"If this is what's cool now, I think I'm done. I no longer have any connection to this world. I'm gonna go home and kill myself." |

I've still only seen eight of the Golion eps as I haven't gotten through all of the DVDs yet, and haven't seen any Sincline episodes yet so I can't comment on him at all.
From what I've seen, I will say I did get a kick out of Sadak/Yurak saying things like "kiss my ass" and hollering that the Earthlings needed to be sent to Hell. Actually I could see Yurak saying all of that if he wasn't being censored, though, so it wasn't a huge change from his personality. I did miss the sniping between Yurak and Haggar, although it's interesting to see it with Sadak and Honerva actually not having the robots/magic rivalry thing going on. I also liked things like the drunk soldiers in ep 12 (Bad Birthday Party). Daibazaal is pretty dull and no Zarkon, though, and Honerva is okay, although not nearly as fun as Haggar. I enjoyed the interchange between the Viceroy and the captain in ep 12 where they're talking about losing their heads. I knew something along those lines was really being said when the "robot" captain made that smirking little gesture to Taybor with the hand at his neck. The captain just isn't as much fun without that fruity nasal voice though... between that and his flouncing cape and smirks, he's a fun one-shot character in Voltron, especially contrasted with whiny, weasely Prince "when you conquer the entire universe, remember I'm your nephew!" Taybor. In Golion, both the Viceroy and captain are just meh, another couple of evil dudes. |

This topic thread reminds me that I happened to watch much of the scenes from Golion on YouTube. I hadn't really watched any episodes, but from what I get of it, I definitely agree with Ky. I seen more of Sincline's monstrous personality & Sadak's animosity toward the slaves in the first episodes.
I find Golion rather unique from other cartoons, because of the fact it has blood & guts in it. That's something we don't see much in animations. I'll have to watch more of the episodes of Golion, so I could get a more thorough perspective, even though I didn't like the fact Sven & Avok were killed. <a href="http://s78.photobucket.com/albums/j116/GangstaIris/?action=view¤t=princessiris3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j116/GangstaIris/princessiris3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |

This weekend I got a chance to watch more of Golion. Now I've seen up to episode 16. (Just two more to go and I'm done with the first set!)
The differences between the episodes were interesting, although unfortunately the Galrans don't seem to be getting all that more compelling. I enjoy the shiny animation (these DVDs seem really clear, especially on a HD TV), and I admit to getting a huge kick out of the cheesy music. I laughed my ass off at the "black lion" song they played in ep 14, and then the new "blue lion" one in ep 16. The heroes got a lot of good lines; the bad guys not so much. (Though Sadak saying "damn you" every so often and "Eat this" in his robeast form did amuse.) Now for more villain-specific thoughts. Despite the novelty of his tendency to curse and his more overt aggressive remarks, Sadak is not as cool as Yurak. Especially in his final appearance, Sadak comes off kind of like a clueless weenie. Yurak might have begged, but at least he was trying to salvage his dignity and to save face, preferring to go out in a blaze of glory instead of exile, Sadak was just resigned since it was declared he was a goner anyway. Daibazaal just doesn't have all that much personality. He grumbles and roars and shouts "die" and didn't even come off with much emotion dealing with Sincline. Sincline is not anywhere near as personable as Lotor. He's the kind of villain that's ruthless and while effective, I know in the end I'll be glad to see him get defeated. I mean, with remarks like "It's up to me to decide when you die!" when Fala says she'd take her own life before surrendering to him, it really just doesn't endear you to him. Honerva was okay in ep 13, but without the sneering snark of Haggar she just isn't quite as enjoyable to watch. |

Oh noes, I double posted!
I finally got through the end of the Golion DVDs last night. Eps 17 and 18 were both a fun watch. I did like that Galra has an occult science lab. How can I get a job like that? Then again, the scientist (not a rival witch like in Voltron, I noticed) does seem to have a high risk hazard with Sincline around. Nice that he basically just killed him to test how the snake blood would work, rather than because he was angry at the failure as I would have guessed from Voltron's dialogue. Also, I gathered from the exchange in the woods where Sincline says he'd have his own fill of the princess' blood not necessarily that he'd kill her, but I read into it that he was alluding to popping her royal cherry, especially given her reply of "by the likes of you?" What do you guys think? |
