I don't know how others do photomanips, but I'll tell you the method I have. I use Adobe Photoshop's Layer System. One layer has the bottom image, the top layer has what will cover the bottom image. That way I can modify one layer at a time so if I screw something up, it's one layer, not the whole image. Plus I can change colors or effects a layer at a time. For example, the screenshot I used for Lotor had the purple color pallette. After some good concrit, I changed it. I had made another layer to color the blue onto the arms, so after a hue change on that layer and the layer that had Lotor's face, the change was done in a minute. I save it as a jpg when I'm finished. I think PSP has a similar layer system but I'm not familiar with that program. If you have a top shot you only want a piece to, once it's on it's own layer, you erase what you don't want (easy) or apply a mask (harder) so that the lower stuff shows through. Actually, that's about how I do it, Ky, except that I use a combination of adobe photoshop and MS Paint. I too, save in layers, and I'm constantly saving and constantly renaming so I don't lose track of my layers.
Here's a quick concept illustration. There are a ton of layers involved in this pic, but I've only picked a few to demonstrate my point. The top three are the primary pics I 'borrowed'. But there are others I've used for this pic, little bits and pieces of things here and there, that may or may not be related to the Voltron or Go Lion world as we know it. It might be an already existing anime pic that I borrowed elements from, or it might be a real pic (like the one you did for Lotor, Ky) that I recolored to look 'anime-ish'. Here's the concept from start to finish. The top three pics that I primarily used are boxed out in RED as is the final picture below.  I used photoshop to 'grey-scale' the pic once I had Keith's body the way I wanted it to look, proportionately speaking. This pic is a pic I created for the joint story that Kelly (AlluraBlue4) and I have written and are 'rewriting' and posting to KAEX and The Castle of Lions Archive. The name of the story is 'The Giving', and this is a scene where Keith is caught in an unexpected storm, the storm created by Haggar the Witch as a means of getting rid of Keith. It takes me roughly two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the pic I'm doing, to actually create it. Sometimes longer, again depending on the complexity. Sorry . . . I know this isn't where this should be posted, but I thought I'd throw this here since you mentioned it, Ky. But I'm simply wow'ed by your talent, girl! Tell me about it. I have so many ideas for photo manips that once i get the dough, I'm planning to get have my friend install the Photo software AlluraP has. One great photo manip I plan to do is one of my friend who recently died & an ex-husband who treated her like a dog. I plan to block him out of the pic & replace it with her current husband.
